Thank you Klaas and John, much appreciated.

The sat/ip idea looks really interesting. I found the answer to my 
question just after I hit 'send' on this thread in the MythTV forum here 
-> https://forum.mythtv.org/viewtopic.php?t=3286 and subsequently found 
this specifically about 0.32 -> https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Channel_Scanning

My two cards have scanned OK now. I just need to finish the 
configuration and test it.
