the clicking/popping was what i was getting.
just going off the 3.5mm jack info: https://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2014/07/raspberry-pi-model-b-3-5mm-audiovideo-jack/ so i figured the click/popping i was getting was down to the rpi connector as the rest of my kit worked fine (laptop, phone, USB soundcard). maybe not, and i need to research more!
a job researching more into this over the weekend if i get the time.
