Additional info:
I installed a new mythbuntu VM of version 14.04 to see if 16.04.1 had some
kind of problem, and had the same result -- all channels that acquired lock
in the scan said "Timed out, no channels".

I then tried install mythbuntu 16.04.01 on a PC directly rather than a VM,
and the channel scan was successful and DID NOT have the problem. This PC
and the original mac are on the same network and subnet, so I think the
issue may have been related to the VM networking somehow. I had configured
the osx firewall to allow VirtualBox, so I'm not sure what exactly was the
root cause.

So I might futz around with the VirtualBox network config, or I might just
try to install mythbuntu natively on the mac.
Thanks,
Adrian
