Been there, had that.
Go into Mythfrontend -> TV -> TV Settings -> Playback
On the 3rd page, make sure that you are set to a VDPAU Playback Profile.
I was doing some messing around removing duplicate lines in the Settings
table (relics of other messing around!). and somehow, that setting got
changed to a software only profile.
The main symptom was messed up audio. I spent a LOT of time playing with
the audio settings, until I realized that the video also had a stutter
or pause every few seconds. The motherboard is a Zotac Ion which is not
quite capable of HD playback via software alone.
Verrrryyyy frustrating to realize that I had been chasing the wrong
rainbow and that there was no pot of gold there.
