sudo echo -- '-lirc' > /sys/class/rc/rcp/protocols.

You can also check before using 'cat /sys/class/rc/rcp/protocols' which 
prints a list of protocols, one of which in brackets. You can write that 
protocol to the ..../rc0/protocols file to get exactly the same state as 
before-
