The "white noise" on skip was an issue I experienced a couple of years
ago.  Seems to be a pulse audio issue.  JYA provided the solution in
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/526039#526039 where he
says,

The problem is in pulse, so yes, you change it in pulse config.
usually in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
add the line: default-sample-rate = 48000
