Looking through my setup, I realized I wasn't running nmbd, the name
service daemon. I was only running smbd, the file server. Because my
file servers are at fixed IP addresses and I have local DNS setup this
wasn't a problem. I could still browse on my Windows machines to
\\server1\area1 or whatever.
So, are you running nmbd? It's generally setup as a service separate
from smbd.
