Note if it is an overheating problem, this may be normal. When the fan on my
video card failed, playback would freeze up and the video card would 'disappear'
from the system.
Rebooting the system would have things working again (because the vid card had
cooled enough in the mean time since it wasn't doing anything), and worked again
until watching a fair amount of TV (took 10-15 minutes for it to overheat).
So unless you have actually watched an hour of TV, things may not really be
fixed. Running just the GUI doesn't stress the video card at all (or at least,
not enough to cause it to overheat).
And as other have said, it could be beyond just the fan for the video card (if
it has one) - could also be a case fan such that nothing is sucking the hot air
out of the case, so the video card fan is just circulating hot air.
