Thanks again to all. I have RG6 cables with screw-on connectors and very 
short runs (a high-rise apartment) so it sounds like I'll be good. I 
vaguely remember ~9 years ago when I set up my original box I had the cable 
guy out because my PVR-500 wasn't as crisp as I expected and he actually 
found (if an aging memory serves) that the line was a bit "hot". I'm happy 
to save the $40 cost of an amp.
