That's the only sure-fire wire.  Some skip step 2 and get lucky.  Others 
skip step 2 and most things match up, but they may have some channels 
that don't (which can--depending on configuration--result in adding 
extra, not-properly-connected channels and other data ugliness) and may 
not even notice until the bad data causes problems later.
