It's been months since I tried using Z to skip commercials. When I did 
that, skip worked correctly the first time, but not after that, so I 
went back to using the > key on my remote. I used to use a ReplayTV with 
autoskip. The only time I had to turn off autoskip was when watching PBS 
programs. They sometimes had fade to black, but without a following 
commercial (obviously). So I don't think Comcast cable (greater 
Portland, Oregon) is an issue.

I'm running a "stock" Ubuntu 12.04 with both backend and frontend.
