This is why I brought it up.

To everyone not Simon:

If you notice a drop in quality ring up the Broadcaster AND Cable company or Satellite provider and tell them, don’t use technical terms or you’ll be disregarded as one of those "tech types who are never happy whatever we do” just tell them the picture is fuzzier or jerkier than it was last week, helpful if it’s just one or two channels, tell them that the other (competitors) channels are fine so it can’t be your TV. Also ring them up, none of these people take emails or especially forum posts seriously, possibly tweeting about it has more impact these days but most Broadcaster senior management are very old school, even if the social media department gets heated Management may not care.

Exactly, well said.

It’s especially a problem in the UK, we rarely complain, so we often get poor service/products/prices etc. At least that does mean when we do complain it’s more notable.

Of course a new codec means a different "look” to over compressed material so this will be taken as an opportunity to squeeze the wringer a little more. On top of that the encoder manufacturers outrageous claims might well be believed and acted on!

I was shown in all seriousness a demo of UHD football at 8Mbps by one encoder manufacturer, truly awful. The worst part was they seemed proud of it.

I haven’t seen enough h265 yet to have a eye for it’s look, the over compressed stuff I’ve seen at 15 and 20Mbps for UHD just looks soft and much like over compressed h264.

Andre
