On my last frontend, I undervolted the video card fan to make it quieter. I
then monitored the GPU's temperature during playback (in the summertime,
when ambient temperatures in the house were highest) until I was satisfied
I wasn't pushing the envelope.

VDPAU doesn't stress the card like 3D games do, so the "undercooled" card
was still working fine after several years of use when upgrade time came
around.
