Perhaps I misunderstood the original post, but I thought the issue was that it wasn't just attempting to use S1E1 as a last resort, it was writing and saving S1E1 to the database record?

Agreed, which was kind of my point (preference?). I would rather nothing than incorrect. If flicking through recordings I see something with no artwork I immediately know something is 'wrong' and needs to be fixed. If it has something plausible, I probably won't realize it is wrong and therefore won't fix.
