Thanks for the suggestion, Checking through the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file
there was reference to a particular nvidia driver not being found, so
another was being loaded. After installing the proprietary driver, the
screen resolution issue went away. Now another issue has arisen, but
that's another story and another thread.
