FWIW, in grub you can select advanced and recovery mode which will let
you get to a console and at any logs you need to see. You can also hit
escape with that purple splash screen comes up and it should revert to
the console text boot. If that doesn't work, you can go into grub and
edit the kernel boot line to remove "quiet splash" and it will disable
that splash screen.
