I have run into the xfce panel issue before. Try this from a terminal:
pkill xfce4-panel
Then log out and save your session. That should disable it.
I haven't run into this issue lately with Fedora. Mythtv runs in full
screen and I haven't bothered to get rid of the panel since it has a few
useful icons on there.
