thanks, the dev package was installed; it has to be there to build the 
mesa libraries with vdpau. i did get the configure to show the vdpau, by 
starting over on a clean install (lubuntu-raring), setting up the myth 
build before compiling the mesa or changing out the kernel. 
unfortunately there is a problem with the alsa dev packages in raring, 
so the make fails, but there is a bug report on it and it should be 
fixed soon.. i am building the myth without alsa, but i am not sure i 
will get audio to work, i used hdmi for the radeon. but i think the 
original problem is resolved.
