Personally I like having transparent channel icons (using MythBuntu 
theme atm), but I know where you're coming from. Back when I used Blue 
Abstract, I'd run an image magick conversion script on the 
~/.mythtv/channels directory, flattening the png's. Don't have the 
script on hand at the moment, but you could use something like: 
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2322750/replace-transparency-in-png-images-with-white-background 
though you might prefer a black or blue background vs. white.
