Too many places it might be looking.  Mixing kernels
and various user space utilities sometimes produces
interesting results.

Try (as root), a
   rmmod ivtv; modprobe ivtv ivtv_debug=127
and see if any additional useful messages are displayed.

Via and nVidia chipsets have had various "bugs"/"features"
reported since their introduction.  Some have workarounds,
and some, by anecdotal reports, are just systemic and random.
If you want the least hassles, I would recommend staying
with the processor vendor chipsets.  On the other hand,
debugging the kernel and drivers can be fun.
