Highly useful for us without kids, too. Two examples:

* Only keep one episode at any given time. Record _SportsCenter_ (in
  this case with a once-a-day recording rule, because SchedulesDirect
  don't have distinct episode IDs for the program) to always have a
  recap of the previous day's events. Also works for the nightly news,
  or _TMZ_, or _Mad Money_.

* Keep a certain number of episodes at any given time. If you enjoy
  watching the Tonight Show with Jay Leno but can't watch it daily,
  you might always want the five most recent episodes available.
