Thanks for the tip. This pointed me in the right direction. I read the
article here:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Frame_display_timing

and now Mythfrontend can access /dev/rtc. With rtc frame timing the
audio dropouts are much less frequent. I can run VDPAU Normal again!
