First
- rescan your audio device in the frontend setup.
- check you don't have any legacy vdpau settings (removed keywords) in
video playback
(don't think the 8400 supports the removed keywords)
- check the log files
- debug vdpau outside mythtv with vdpauinfo etc..

There is nothing wrong with nVidia driver 295 on lucid 10.04.3.
There are two versions of the 8400GS with diff vdpau capabilities.VP2 or
VP3.
