Or myth distros could enforce setting up the data on a different
partition so that 1st time users aren't caught in a trap. There is
enough to learn when first installing mythtv without needing to second
guess a supposedly specialist distro's partitioning scheme (or lack of
scheme).

/var/lib/mythtv may be the default location for the recordings
directory because of some desire to go with filesystem purity, but it
is difficult to set as a separate partition on installation, and
non-intuitive, particularly if you haven't set up mythtv before and
have got lost in the wiki.
