i have three nvidia ion FEs, all are giada cube since discontinued
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856176002).
originally they ran off 8GB usb flash booting debian testing. i had no
desktop environment just used openbox. boot times were a bit slow for
me from the USB flash drive so i have since upgraded them to netboot
using mini-myth which significantly reduced the boot time and
increased overall system responsiveness.

nvidia ions are entirely capable as FE only systems, i haven't found
anything these can't handle but YMMV!
