Yes it is a driver problem.  (My nVidia card died, so I got the 
old ATI card out of the draw.  Will buy another nVidia card after 
submitting a bug report or two.)  

And, yes, it was set to CPU+, now set to slim.  

In the mena time adding this, 
Option "EnablePageFlip" "False"
to xorg.con makes things much more civilised.  Will experiment 
with other settings.
