I'm using TOSLINK audio out, but maybe something similar will work for you.
To get sound to work on Flash sites in Firefox (youtube, espn3, etc.) I had
to create the file /etc/asound.conf

It contains this:

----8<----
pcm.!default {
       type hw
       card 0
       device 1
}
----8<----

(The card number and device number will likely be different in your case.)

Now sound works in Firefox.
