I have 2 hvr-1600s, and every now and then one or the other will start
up with no audio on the analog side.  Another thing that used to happen
more frequently, but now is quite rare is that one or the other would
start up with a red screen - no signal.

In both cases, my current fix has been to unload and reload the drivers,
which has worked every time so far.  For my particular hvr-1600s it
takes unloading quite a few drivers:
rmmod cx18
rmmod tuner-simple
rmmod tuner-types
rmmod s5h1409
rmmod tveeprom
rmmod dvb-core
rmmod cs5345
rmmod tuner
rmmod cx2341x
rmmod v4l2-common
rmmod videodev
rmmod v4l2-compat-ioctl32
