and the dev has been going for a year now with a positive backing from
AMD. As said, it is FOSS. If performance is the same between FOSS and
propriety, FOSS is my choice. Note that these drivers were released
about a year ago. Any opinion formed before that is not relevant. Take
that into account when reading reviews on the net.

I have 3 systems running with ATI cards. All of them run 3d Perfectly.
My MythTV box runs tear free crystal clear 1080p on HDMI with sound. 

Sure, I've been using NVidia under linux since owning a RIVA128 running
under framebuffer since the card was not supported yet. The link
between NVidia and Linux was quite strong with me. But just as I was
open to change in the past, the time of ATI in Linux has come. Not
saying that NVidia is dead (although there are opinions that their gold
star code standard is slipping), but FOSS ATI is most certainly
comparible for the same investment.
