In practice, in the US, the only network that regularly has the
problem for network content is CBS, the current holder of the
late Sunday afternoon NFL game, since they will not shorten
"60 minutes" (to "37 minutes"?) or preempt the show just
because the football game on immediately before runs late.
("60 minutes" is at a different end of the spectrum, the
*prestige* show.  It has a hallowed position in the network.
No where near as profitably as the event show, but a show
on which you demonstrate your commitment to excellence
(or something).  You do not mess with your excellence.)
