well, looks like it's fixed; reinstalled 11.04, and its working straight off
the bat!
i was about to try 'modprobe lirc_mceusb(2)', but didnt need to in the end.
i guess this is what the info i found meant about its now in the kernel and
not lirc.

all working :)
