Seems that I got the ringbuffer all wrong... Checking my own post, it 
seems that the ringbuffer really is a BE thing, and this explains why I 
didn't find again on the FE. So, let's forget the ringbuffer.

However, this opens a new issue: is there any buffering in a FE trying 
to handle network jitter when doing live-TV? If so, can it be configured 
somehow?
