On the rsync side of things you might want to consider rsnapshot
(http://rsnapshot.org/). I have been using that for some time now and
really like it. It is a wrapper around rsync and allows you to keep
multiple versions of files so you can restore further back in time. As
it is using hardlinks the storage is used very efficiently.

RAID is not a backup. It guards against single disk failure and may
help increase uptime. However (accidentally) deleting a file or file
corruption is replicated automatically over the RAID members as well,
so your preferred method of using rsync like tools as well is highly
recommended!
