I am looking for functionality more like a studio monitor, but perhaps something can be adapted from the services API / telnet interface.

No. MythTV is currently designed for normal consumer needs, which
typically mean one computer for one playback on one display. It will
not multiplex a single instance of playback to multiple outputs.

Depending on what you want to accomplish, there are a couple
possibilities. If you just want an independent display for control,
look into the old telnet interface and the new Services API. You may
want to check out this iOS application one of the MythTV developers is
writing for an example of what you might do in regards to remote control
of a frontend through the Services API.

If you're looking for something along the lines of a studio monitor
(based off the email signature), where you need video and additional
information on one screen, but video only for broadcast, you're going to
be looking at some significant amount of programming work. Mark Kendall
or Daniel Kristjansson would know best what it would take to make such work.
