If your BBC HD recordings are 1440x1080, that would imply that they were 4:3, 
which is a bit unlikely for HD, unless this was a broadcast of a film or other 
program originally broadcast (or made) in 4:3 (and they couldn't be bothered to 
refactor it).

Perhaps you were just unlucky in your choice of recording material.
