OK, thanks for that. I have more news...

$ mplayer 7940_20110828153000.mpg plays fine.
$ mplayer -vo vdpau 7940_20110828153000.mpg plays fine.
$ mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau 7940_20110828153000.mpg does not play *

* and in fact shows exactly the same white flashing screen as the MythTV internal player when choosing Video Playback Profile 'VDPAU *'

So it looks like an x264 playback issue.

BBC HD recordings are Video: h264 (High), yuv420p, 1440x1080
Channel 4 HD recordings are Video: h264 (Main), yuv420p, 1920x1080
