If you want to get the newest, say .mpg file in a directory you can do:

ls -1tr | grep -i ".mpg$" | tail -1

which you can enclose in backticks, so you could do:-

tail -f +1 `ls -1tr | grep -i ".mpg$" | tail -1`

which will tail and follow the newest .mpg file in the current
directory from the start. (The +1 means start at the beginning.)
