I have been browsing over these threads which have problems with 
ubuntu/mythbuntu since I run fedora. I have reached the conclusion that 
there is something wrong with the updates or update system which ubuntu 
uses which causes all sorts of failed driver updates on ubuntu.

I have exactly the same 9500GT with 512MB RAM and VDPAU has been running 
beautifully for me for about a year on Fedora 12. YES, there is a step 
problem to be overcome with nouveau and first install of the driver is a 
little picky if you do not use rpmfusion, but once loaded IT WORKS.
I'm not sure, offhand, if it is the early 260 driver or the later 256 
series now on the box, but it works FINE and has since the original 
vdpau capable driver. Recording 3 HD streams and one SD stream (PVR500) 
while playing back an HD stream simultaneously. NO tearing. The box is a 
2.4GHz core 2 duo.
So this combination CAN go together, but there is something not quite 
right with ubuntu as ubuntu is the difference.

I would suggest that you try downloading and installing fedora 14 to an 
8 Gig USB stick, copy your mythconverg database to it, use rpmfusion or 
atrpms to install myth, and the nvidia driver on it, and see whether it 
will work. Mount your storage directories directly to the fedora setup.
Doing it this way, you can leave your entire mythbuntu setup alone. You 
need only be careful that if you record or delete any programs that you 
copy back your mythconverg database before rebooting to mythbuntu.

It will take a little time to do the download and install but it might 
help you determine what is going wrong.
