Oh, good call. I installed from DVD so it would be using all default drivers since I've not installed any. 
To my surprise, the video card I installed in this machine turned out to be a nvidia 5200. I say surprise because there was no label on it, I snagged it out of a workstation I still had in my junk pile. I'll install the proper nvidia driver tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.
