root is the standard linux user who has administrator rights. You
need to be this user in order to mount a drive - otherwise you'll get
a 'permission denied' error when you try and run the mount command.

standard method to become the root user is to type

$ su

and then enter the root user's password.

If you're running Ubuntu then you may have to type

$ sudo -s

and then enter the current user's password.

If neither of these work then you need to find out how to become the
root user in whatever flavour of linux you're using.

I'd suggest that you get used to visiting the Wiki pages and forums of
your linux distribution for answers to these sort of questions, since
they're not mythtv related. I'm sure if you'd googled for "Mount USB
Drive under Ununtu" you 'd have got a quicker, and probably better
answer to your question.

Hope this helps.
