Last winter I tried to step from 8.10 to 9.10. Looking trough the
changes, not only on myth but also on ubuntu itself, I decided it was
time for a fresh install. I have to admit, the 8.10 installation was
started 7.4 and made the steps inbetween.
Reasons for a fresh install did include the changes in myth, an update
did not work, later I found it was possibly due to database changes.
The major ubuntu reason for a fresh install was the move from ext3 to
ext4. Specially for myth recordings, this was welcome. However, if you
previously already have chosen an alternate filesystem, then you might
not need ext4 and/or a fresh install.
With an ubuntu update the ext3 filesystems can be updated to ext4, but
that does not remove the problems, as upgraded ext3 filesystems are not
fully converted, just enough to act as ext4, not to gain the advantages.
On the other hand I did have severe problems with the fresh install of
8.10: analoge channel scanning did not work for example. And the data
migration is something...

I started with the re-installation preparation untill the machine should
go off: backup and configuration and such all prepared. Then I started
with an upgrade, just to see if it works. Unfortunately, the myth
database change (and my twiggling with it) ruined the database. I have
to admit I screwed up more. Then I switched back to re-installation. I
used about a weekend for the update.
So its up to you.
