[mythtv-users] Cannot Import DVD

On Windows you have to have a different solution for dealing with CSS
(copy protection) handbrake nolonger includes it... However Handbrake
on linux will use an installed version of LIBDVDCSS.

I use it regularly with a slightly customised profile to rip my dvd
collection (which I am still working my way through).

after lots of testing I got a profile which gives perfect (to my eyes)
copy of the DVD main title while going from 7.2GB per DVD down to
between 1.2 and 3.2GB...

I tend to RIP the DVD to an ISO file (brasero); copy it to the quad
core server; queue up the ISOs for transcoding... that way the
processor can continue whirring away during the day as a RIP takes a
lot less time than the transcoding.

occasionally it doesnt like a DVD; because the enhanced copy
protection (Casino Royale; Dark Knight). I have managed to get round
this in various ways; direct Handbrake access to the DVD. Using a
different application to strip and recreate the VOBs (DVD95 set to
create a 100% quality file - no transcoding). In this way an ISO image
is created with just the title and somehow DVD95 manages to defeat the
enhanced sony copy protection.

I of course do not condone onward distribution of media files; I use
these strictly for my own use on my own Myth Server.

FYI: My customised profile uses mkv with h264 at quality=20 (I think);
in this way I can incorporate as many audio and subtitle tracks as I
like into the mkv and not have to worry about having to determine it
too carefully up front. The only downside of Handbrake is its
inability to deal with DTS AC3 audio tracks; but every DVD I have seen
carries a 5.1 digital surround track - which is half the bitrate; but
I can't tell the difference.
