I don't see IOBOUND errors in the logs so the issue does not appear to
be the recording disks/mythbackend being overloaded and dropping
data. Assuming that FireWire recordings seem otherwise reliable, you
likely don't have one of the problematic chipsets.
It is likely a simple signal issue. If the issue happens often with a
certain channel, if possible watch the channel directly during
recording (by connecting the component jacks on the cable box to the
display), and see if the glitches occur there too. Make sure all coax
cable connections are tight and in good condition, and if necessary
request a cable-company technician test the signal strength and
quality.
I've seen this happen occasionally over the past 4.5 years of
recording with FireWire. It varies by channel; for example, there was
a period of about a month during which HBO HD, and only HBO, saw
frequent dropouts, and recently, ESPN HD, and not ESPN2 HD or another
channel, had very bad dropouts for a couple of days.
