Well nobody else replied in 5 days so I suppose I'll bite.

Can we focus on the playback then?

Go ahead and startup mythfrontend with "mythfrontend -v playback -l
/var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend_verbose.log" and simulate a crash while
playing back HD-PVR recorded content.

Lets start with those verbose playback logs while replicating the
problem and see what we get.
