Thanks to 3D being in the H.264 spec it is actually quite efficient.
The compression can rely on the fact that the left and right eye
images are very similar to get better compression. So the 3D version
will be up to 50% bigger but could be less.

I agree that is a ploy to get people to upgrade, but they won't be
that much more and they will be compatible. It doesn't really require
any special tech. You just need a fast refresh rate and that is about
it. The 3D H264 codec automatically will fall back to 2D when showing
on a 2D display.
