I bought 6x1.5TB Seagate drives for my RAID5 array (Barracuda 7200.11
ST31500341AS) about 18 months ago; my backend wouldn't reboot last
week: turned out one drive didn't respond ata commands anymore and
would lock the bios boot ; then found that another drive was clicking
like crazy..

I replaced one disk with a 2TB samsung drive, which the RAID array was
rebuilding, the seagate that was clicking suddenly died...
Luckily, when out of frustration of loosing it all I slapped the disk,
it started to work again. Just sufficiently for the raid array to
rebuild completely. It has too been replaced by another 2TB samsung
now.

so two drives out of 6 dying in 18 months, so close to each other
isn't that great.

At work, we use 500GB NL35.2, the last batch of drives (12) , a
quarter died within 18 months..

So sure they are under warranty, but really it's pretty poor from
seagate. I was very happy with seagate in the past.

The new drives we bought are the WD 2TB Green raid edition... so far
no problem whatsoever.

I've never heard of the firmware problem with Samsung drive, when I
bought the 2TB drive to replace the seagate last week, they were on
special and the only 2TB drives they had in stock.

Having said that, when I bought the 1.5TB seagate, everyone were
complaining of their "firmware disaster", now I bought samsung and
once again we have a firmware disaster.

Not sure what those disasters refer to, but it surely have impacted me
whatsoever
