I couldn't really follow what you have done, way off in what sense?
If you are unable to see the "blacker than black" and "whiter than white" bars at ANY reasonable brightness and contrast setting then your TV needs to have studio levels.
The AVS thread I linked to explains how to use the test patterns better than a few lines on here.
Note that vdpau video seems to be independently rendered at full or studio levels regardless of nvidia-settings, so adjust video with "vdpaustudio" or not and the theme with nvidia-settings.
