  For the record I appear to have fixed this.  I think I'd used

but increased some of the numbers.  Precisely how this lead to the 
writeStringList failures I don't know but changing these settings back 
to whats in the wiki and restarting mysql fixed it.

Shrug.

As they say, if it ain't broke...  but I can't resist fiddling. :)
