Btw, for those who -do- want to hear about those emergency alerts in
a timely manner, I recommend http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/6899,
whose entire purpose is to detect (in real time, as recordings are
taking place) and alert you (again in real time) to such things.

How? Because severe weather alerts and similar sorts of things in
the US are supposed to be preceded by EAS tonebursts, and that's
exactly what this code detects. [Unfortunately, on my cable system,
I get "weekly" tests often 3-4 times/week, across ALL channels
simultaneously, at random times, and have never yet had a real
emergency for which an EAS would have been justified. So my
purpose in writing the code was not to know when to flee, but
to know which programs need to be immediately rescheduled for
whatever repeats might be available.]

At some point, I'll be moving the actual code to a scripts page in
the wiki, but at the moment, you can find it in the ticket.

[This will also detect silences. This might be useful in telling you
that your provider's upstream signal source has been blown away in
whatever calamity you might be expecting warnings from. More likely,
though, it'll just notify you about upstream equipment failures and
general technician ineptitude, which seem far more common.]
