I use MythVideo for this.
Create a "wrapper" script that reads the first line of a file and
executes it.
Tie script to a MythVideo file type. e.g. exc
Create your mythvideo, e.g. Pidgin.exc
Have as the one line in this file /usr/bin/pidgin
